Azabaches have been worn to protect against the Mal de Ojo, or evil eye for many decorations. The evil eye is believed to result of excessive admiration or envious looks by others. Having newborn babies wear an azabache (a gold bracelet or gold pin with a black or red coral charm), is believed to protect them from the evil eye. I always remember wearing one as a child, so my connection with it is one that is greatly filled with nostalgia!
